The Power of Yin

On the Yin Yoga website https://yinyoga.com/, Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers remind us that Yin Yoga is NOT intended to be Restorative Yoga. Yin includes long held, static poses (asanas) that stress the connective tissue (fascia) and over time allow them to be reshaped. The idea is for the practitioner to find that Goldilocks feeling in each of the shapes….not too much/not too little….that just right feeling. The body should never be forced into poses or experience a red hot burning feeling. In the Yin practice we get in the pose, find stillness, and hold for time.

A regular practice of yin yoga will enhance the mobility of joints and help develop greater strength and flexibility through the entire body. Combined with the use of breath and meditation the benefits are more than just physical.

“We need to sleep, and that’s why people are so drawn to yoga nidra,” says Jennifer Reis, founder of Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra. A guided 20 minute meditation in yoga nidra is the equivalent of two to three hours of deep sleep. The practice balances the “fight or flight” and “rest and digest” nervous systems in the body, shifts brain wave activity and even fights insomnia, anxiety and depression. A typical practice guides student through eight stages to include body scanning and connecting with the breath. The connection with breaths allows access to inner healing energy. Whether your goal is deep sleep, self-discovery or radical healing, practicing the technique of yoga nidra can help you reconnect with your inner purpose. 

REV proudly offers two yin classes weekly. One on Sundays is pure yin from 10:30-11:30am. On Fridays from 4:30-6, we offer a combination class on Yin and Nidra. It’s a great way to kick off a weekend feeling focused and rejuvenated! Both are taught by Terri Walsh.
